Alter Eco Quinoa

Quinoa, an annual herb that grows from 3 to 6 feet high in the Bolivian Altiplano, contains more proteins than any other cereal and is particularly easy to digest as it is lighter than most grains. Referred to by the locals as a "protein powerhouse", it kept the Incan armies strong and robust. It was one of three staple foods, along with corn and potatoes, of the ancient Inca civilization.

Quinoa has a long history narrated by numerous myths and legends surrounding its culture. In the Quechua language of the Incas, "Quinoa" is the Chisiya Mama or the "Mother Grain". Regarded as sacred, it has been cultivated in Andes Mountains of South America for more than 5,000 years.

Quinoa is now being re-discovered and many Bolivian farmers are once again cultivating this tradition crop, thereby preserving their rich cultural heritage.

Alter Eco Rice

Discover our uniquely colorful range of rice, cultivated using ancestral farming methods that ensure superior quality and respect for the environment.

Whole farming communities tick to the timeless routines of planting and harvesting - the stage of the rice crop marking the passage of time and seasons. In Thailand, rice is not only thought of as food, but as an integral part of the culture, with several traditional festivals marking the start and end of the rice farming season.

After the harvest, the rice is processed and packaged at the Surin cooperative. This additional activity represents a strong added value for its members.

Coral Rice

Alter Eco Coral Red Rice (Khao Deng variety) is derived from an ancient red rice grain. This unique rice is obtained by a natural technique using traditional millstones. The polished grains acquire a beautiful coral color and while the grains retain all the natural riches and minerals of whole grain red rice, they are lighter and easier to digest.

This original rice was developed in partnership with Alter Eco. In this way, Alter Eco helps the farmers of Surin to diversify their offer and create new business.

Purple Rice

Alter Eco Purple Rice (Khao Gram variety) is a unique purple grain that is glutinious when cooked and has a delicate, sweet palate. Due to its rich taste and aesthetic appeal, this traditional rice is used by local communities for feasts and celebrations. It is grown exclusively in the fertile soil of the Esan Plateau, in the East of Thailand, situated close to the Cambodian border. This particular region has the ideal combination of soil and climatic conditions to produce nutritious and flavorful rice.

The purple rice is mixed with naturally perfumed White Jasmine rice to give it an ideal texture while retaining its vibrant purple color and sweet flavor.
