Coop Overview

Initiated in 1993 by Dr. Sarath Ranaweera, a specialist in the organic culture of tea, the Small Organic Farmers Association (SOFA) of the Kandy area in Sri Lanka now consists of 700 farming families and directly benefits more than 3,500 people. The gathering of producers in a single cooperative and the shift to organic agriculture increased the number of potential outlets for Kandi's tea. Moreover, the use of traditional methods and the reintroduction of certain species are contributing to a sustainable form of agriculture and to the preservation of the local cultural heritage.
